Cozy's Complete Guide to Girls' Hair

What You’ll Need:

 Wide-tooth comb

Fine-tooth comb

Hair clip

Ponytail holders

Time:

15 minutes

Step 1: Starting with damp hair (either towel-dried or misted), use a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair.  Then, using a fine-tooth comb, part the hair down the middle of the head.  Clip one side up right above the ear.

Step 2: On the other side of the part, use the fine comb to gather a thin section of hair from the crown.  This section should measure about 2 inches from the hairline to the top of the head.

Step 3: Divide this section into three, and begin a French braid starting at the crown and curving toward the temple, then toward the back of the head, like the top lobe of a heart.  You will be lifting hair into the braid only from this side of the part.  Leave no loose hair in front of the ears.

Step 4: When you reach the center part at the back of the head, secure the braid with a ponytail holder.  If the hair is very long, end the braid about midear; the ends will hang down the back.

Step 5: Unclip the hair on the other side of the part and repeat the process.  Secure with a ponytail holder.

Step 6: Join the ends of the braids together in the back with a ponytail holder to form the bottom point of the heart.

 The picture and instructions above were taken from a lovely book called Cozy's Complete Guide to Girl's Hair by Cozy Friedmand.  Anything you could ever need to know about how to style your child's hair you can find in this fabulous book.  And when I say anything I mean anything,  it covers everything from Hair Type to Hair Emergency and just about anything else you can think of. 

Now, I don't have any daughters but I do have three sons,  each with different hair types.  My first son had straight hair,  my second son has very curly hair, and my third son has very loose soft curls so I was able to find out some interesting things about all three of their hair.  When I read about how important it is not to brush curly hair because it will make it look fuzzy I just nodded my head because I couldnt agree more!  That has happened way too many times so I knew exactly what they are talking about.  It is best to comb curly hair with a wide tooth comb when it is wet which is what we usually have to do to style his hair.  

While flipping though the Trendy Tails section I came across a style that really caught my eye,  the wrapped ponytail.  I myself would love to do my hair like this but I am waiting for a special occasion which just so happens to be this weekend when I go on an overnight vacation.   The Braid Brigade section is really cool,  especially for me because I only know how to do regular braids.  The Braid Brigade section will teach you how to do all kinds of neat braids from basic to more intricate such as the Fishtail Braid.  In a hurry and need to fix your daughters hair within only 5 minutes?  No problem,  there is even a section for that too!

Mirror Makeovers

I am sure almost all of you know atleast one person that has been effected by cancer at some point in their life.  I myself know a handful of people that have dealt with or passed away from cancer.  It is a frightening disease that can be quite hard to deal with.  For those of you unfamiliar with cancer let me briefly explain to you what it is.

Cancer is not racist or sexist it does not care about age.  It is a disease that that cause abnormal cells to divide without control and can then invade other tissues.  In some cases cancer cells spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.  There are more than 100 types of cancer which can all be split into broader categories including:  Carcinoma,  Sarcoma,  Leukemia,  Lymphoma and Myeloma,  and Central Nervous System Cancers.  Cancer is a life threateing disease and is very dangerous.  Many people who develop cancer (depending upon the stage and type) go through chemo treatments which causes them to become sick and on top of that hair loss.  The hair loss for some can cause insecurities which can also be troublesome.


Many people I am close to have had to deal with cancer or is currently dealing with cancer,  one person in particular is a close friend of mine who has both breast cancer and lung caner.  Unfortantly she recently suffered from a stroak on top of the cancer is healing in a recovery unit.  Because the stroke left her unable to speak or read I took a special little book to her and read some of it to her.  The book is called Mirror Makeovers and savvy insights for the everyday gal surviving cancer and baldness with a sense of humor.  


This binder like bound hardback book features a bald woman looking into the mirror and the refelection in the mirror is that of a woman with pretty blond hair.  Basically the book helps those who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy to be able to remember to laugh.  She speaks about her own struggles and stories with hair loss due to cancer treatment.  She also teaches you how to do a mirror makeover.  


Okay so each book comes with a small plastic case of three markers(orange, pink,  and blue).  The book also includes ideas for different mirror makeovers such as "The Sandra Dee",  "The Medusa",  and even accessories.  The idea of a mirror makeover is give yourself a makeover by drawing on hair and accessories on your mirror to fit your mood and help cheer yourself up.  Because while dealing with cancer it can be easy to become depressed and sulk but it is a lot harder to find humor or even be cheerful.  


I must say the book put a smile on my friends face and although she isnt able to give herself a mirror makeover yet I am sure she will just as soon as she is able to begin walking again.

The Savvy Shoppers Guide to Thrift and Consignment Stores by Jo Anne Philips

Growing up,  my family frequently shopped at consignment stores.  I think it was partially because we were poor and partially because my mom thought purchasing used clothes for cheaper was  a better deal that purchasing them new.  This is probably because she grew up very poor with barely any clothes or toys.  But then there are the people that are rich,  but still love to go shopping at consignment stores,  like my late grandmother for instance. 


My older sister is also really into good will and consignment stores and once they get together they really do some major good will shopping , something they refer to as "Good Will Hopping"! 

I am sometimes surprised that certain good wills and consignment shops offer brand new items that the companies received too many of,  and to be honest that is what I tend to migrate towards as soon as I take my mom shopping.  That or used DVD's because I am kind of picky and not really into used items.  My mom loves finding great deals though and really does get some awesome deals! 

I recently received a pitch to review a Thrift & Consignment Stores book and of course I jumped on it! What is so awesome about it is the fact that it contains information about local thrift shops in our area!  What are the chances that would happen,  right! 


The book titled "The Savvy Shoppers Guide to Thrift and Consignment Stores" is a very unique book packed full of information about savvy shopping and most importantly  lots of information about local thrift and consignment stores in the greater Sacramento Reno/Tahoe locations.  


 As you flip through the book you will notice that everything is perfectly organized and super easy to understand.  The thrift and consignment store pages are include certain information which is very helpful if your looking for any type of information about local thrift stores in the greater Sacramento Tahoe/Reno area.  You will find the following information listed for you on each page of the thrift/consignment store pages: address,  web address,  store hours,  type of store,  selection description, parking,  prices,  and comments.  



The price is ranked by cute little shopping bag pictures.

• 2 Shopping Bags means they offer bargains
• 3 Shopping Bags means they are very upscale which means it is more than likely going to cost you more.

I found the comment section to be super helpful and the comments varied depending upon the store or what she thought was important to mention about the store.  I also liked that she included detailed parking tips(such as if it is hard to find or located behind a different store).   

I must say I was very excited to see one of my favorite shops in the book...Once Upon A Child.  I do not know if you are familiar with Once Upon A Child or not,  but it is an excellent shop filled with gently used clothes.  Unlike a good will Once Upon A Child is very choosy with what they except and sell and only offer the best of brands. Not only can  you buy from them but you can also sell your childs gently used clothes to them and then receive your choice of either money or store credit.  I sometimes choose store credit because you get a little bit more if you do it that way but receiving the cash sometimes is just as nice. 

Meet the Author:
Jo Anna Philips,   the very talented author of the book is also a speaker and a former newspaper columnist,  feature writer,  and TV & radio host.  One of her achievements includes producing and hosting one of Nevada's health television shows.  She enjoys fashion and shopping which isn't a surprise because she designed and manufactured her very own line of women's sportswear in Sanfransisco.


The book is a must read for any one located in the greater Sacramento Tahoe/Reno area or anyone that will be visiting and wants to do a little local good will/consignment store shopping.

2011 Holiday Gift Guide Day 4 - Flicka Ricka Dicka And Their New Skates Hardback Book

Just in time to celebrate Christmas,  Flicka,  Ricka,  Dicka Hardback book is available for purchase.  If you are a child or parent of the 40's or 50's then more than likely remember this book of timeless tales of the innocence of childhood.  I had never heard about Flicka Ricka Dicka until I was presented with an opportunity to review this classic book,  probably because I am a child of the eighties.  I figured my mom would be familiar with this book because she grew up in the fifities and sure enough it was one of her favorites!


About The Author:
Maj Lindman grew up in Swedenfrom 1886 until her death in 1972.  Although she wrote many and illistrated many childrens books,  she is best known for her tales of the triplet girls - Flicka,  Ricka, and Dicka and their boy counterparts,  Snipp,  Snapp, and Snurr. 


About This Book:
This tale takes place in Sweden where early one Christmas morning three girls(Flicka,  Ricka,  and Dicka) wake up excited to soon open their gifts.  After receiving their Christmas gifts( three sets of skates-one for each girl),  they decided to put them to use.  While enjoying thier Chritmas gift they meet a little boy named Bertie.  When Bertie soon finds himself in danger will the girls be able to save him?  You will have to read it for yourself to find out!




Our Thoughts:
The book titled "Flicka,  Ricka,  Dicka And Their New Skates" is a beautifully illistrated book written by Maj Lindman.  I was sent the updated version of this book which includes a lovely set of paper dolls.  Paper dolls were quite popular back in the days according to my mother who said that they were the number one toy she played with when she was just a young girl.  This festive book features a bright red,  and green hard cover with glittery letters and picture.  This book is recommended for children ages 5-8.  This book would make a fabulous gift for any little girl or adult woman that grew up in the 40's or 50's.

Stinky Kids

STINKYKIDS

Meet Stinky Kids a site dedicated to teaching life lessons through it's fabulous products and books.  This fun brand features 10 different diverse StinkyKids characters including four boys and six girls.  I bet your wondering where the name "StinkyKids" comes from.  The phrase "littlestinkers" was used to describe the innocent behavior of Britt's children when they were younger.  The StinkyKids characters live by the motto "Always be a leader of good",  as they learn to make correct decisions  through their childhood mistakes.  StinkyKids characters teach good values and morals to your children.

StinkyKids provided me with a hardback book to review with my sons.  The name of the book is called "StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors",  written by Britt Menzies.  She created this innovative brand after being inspired by her very own StinkyKids(littlestinkers).  She graduated from Florida State University with two degrees- accounting and financing.  Besides being a full time mother of two children,  she is also an active volunteer with Books,  Bears  and Bonnets, Inc. which is a nonprofit organization founded by her mother in memory of Britt's Aunt who died of uterine cancer. 


My children have a huge collection of books,  so we were excited to add a new book to the collection,  especially being that it is an award winning book.  Stinkykids and the Runaway Scissors is a creatively written book which follows a group of children that decide to have a little beauty salon fun,  but one of the children end up with a haircut.  It's very easy to relate to the book because it features circumstances that we can all somewhat relate to in some way or another.  I remember trying to cut my bangs when I was young and then trying to hide it.  The book teaches valuable life lessons in a fun and innocent way that children can easily understand.

Throughout the 32 pages of this 9 x 11 hardback book you will find some of the most adorable illustrations.  The book is illustrated by both Greg Hardin and John Trent.  Besides the book they also offer adorable plush characters and shirts.

Book Sleep in own bed

"I Sleep in My Own Bed"  is a cute story written and illistrated by Glenn Wright.  This adorable book explains why children should sleep in their own bed in a fun way they can relate to.  The book gives them plenty of reasons why they should sleep in their very own bed instead of just telling them too,  the reasons are very supportive.  It helps calm childrens fears so they are content sleeping by themeselves.  It makes a great bedtime story for any child with fears of sleeping by themselves. The book "I Sleep in My Own Bed",  could really be a blessing if your child suffers from bedtime fears. 

I didn't expect to like the book as much as I did!  It is perfect for my two and a half year old son who sometimes has trouble getting to sleep in his own bed.  I read it to my son each night before he goes to bed and it really helps put him to sleep.   He gets a kick out of the book and can easily understand it.   He also enjoys the cute illustrations in each page of the book. 

This book takes a child on a adventure to all of the places they wouldn't want to sleep and provides them with reasons why their bed is the only place for them to rest their head at night.  Reading this book has become a nigh time ritual in our house and every night my son looks forward to mommy reading him this terrific book.  As he gets older I will be able to start reading it to my youngest son who am I sure will enjoy it just as much.   This book consists of 43 pages of fun reasons why your child should sleep in his or her own bed. 

As mentioned before,  Glenn Wright is the talented author and illustrator of this wonderful book.  He is an syracuse native,  who grew up in Central New York.  He has always had a love for literature and art,  and it really shows in this book!  His son,  wife and daughter was his lovely inspiration for writing this book.

Professor Wormbog

In case you are not familiar with Professor Wormbog,  it is the Original Classic Adventure that launched the highly acclaimed multi-million,  best selling Little Monster Series.  As a young girl they were some of my most beloved series of books to read.  I remember always getting atleast one at the annual scholastic book fairs,  and then reading it over and over again,  until I memorized the book.  Then once I would get older they would get passed down to my younger sister. 

This whimsical fun book is full of detailed artwork and memorable characters that helps draw you into the story.  If you are in search of a funny book that encourages the imagination and sense of humor, then look no further!  Professor Wormbog will provide your children with endless smiles and laughs,  as it takes them on an exciting journey searching for Zipperump-a-Zoo!  This wonderful book was written by a loved children's author by the name of Mercer Mayer.  You may remember him by his "Little Monster" or "Little Critters" series,  I sure do! 

Professor Wormbog is the book that led to his success with his "Little Monsters" series.  It's so exciting that this magnificent book was re released into a collectible version.  It's large hard back cover makes it strong enough to pass down from sibling to sibling.  The hard back book measures 8" x 10",  and comes with 56 pages of pure  excitement.   I'm just happy I was lucky enough to have the opportunity of sharing this loved classic with my children.

Treasure Kai Book

My kids enjoy when I read them books,  so I knew they were really going to enjoy the Treasure Kai book!  This book is unlike other books because it allows your lil one to go on a treasure hunt of their own.  They will read fun stories,  get clues,  and find secret treasure,  keeping them entertained and happy while doing so.  It is so much more interactive than a regular book and will keep your child engaged the entire time.  I couldn't wait to read it to my sons and see how much they would enjoy it.

When the book arrived I pulled it out of the box and was surprised by how large it actually was!  It is a large hard cover book complete with eight plastic treasure chests attached to the side of it.  The first page of the book explains how to use the book correctly so you get the most out of it.  The directions are simple and easy to understand.  I knew I was going to have to keep the book kept us so the kids didn't get into the treasure chests and loose any pieces even though it comes with an extra set of toys.

To get started we separated the map from the back of the book then read "The Treasure Hunt Begins".  After that we opened a treasure chest.  My oldest son decided to choose the second treasure chest.  Inside he found a snake,  which led us to the snake story.  Each treasure is a clue to the next treasure and will determine the next story that you read.  You do this until you find the gold treasure!  My son was so excited when he finally found the treasure!  He imagined he was a pirate on a treasure hunt,  it really got his imagination running wild!

At the end of the story you can choose another chest to open.  You will then go to that Page that matches the clue toy you find inside the chest,  read the story on that page,  and then find the place on the map and place the toy on it.  One of the things I like best about this book is that their are thousands of ways you can find the treasure!  You can also replace it will real coins of your own.  Each time your child is finished place the toys in a different order so they can go on a total different journey.

The Race Fund

I recently had the opportunity to review a wonderful book for children,  along with a wonderful website devoted to animals.  The Race Fund,  which stands for Retirement Assistance and Care for Equines,  helps benefit thouroughbred horses,  racetrack pony horses,  owners and trainers.  They help preserve the lives of many horses and racetrack ponies who can no longer race by helping fund their care and well being while being transitioned to retirement and adoption.   Today,  many horses in the United States are bring sent to slaughter houses when their racing days are over due to a injury,  age,  or non performance.  The R.A.C.E. Fund  helps save the horses from being sent to a cruel death by providing the financial means to do so,  and educating others.

Cherie Morlock is the author of a soon to be realeased book called "A Beautiful Husky Needs A Home."  A book she created in honor of her adopted Husky breed dog.  This beautifully illistrated book is illustrated by Tim Predzimirski.  Cherie Morlock dedicated this amazing book to her loving mother and father would always supported her,  and let her follow her own path.  She also dedicates the book to all homeless pets and shelter animals everywhere and of course her first pet dog,  Runa.

The book is centered around a Siberian Husky bred dog named "Runa".  The story starts out with the dog living in an animal orphanage.  It explains to children where homeless dogs and animals go in a simple way that they can understand.  My seven year old was very interested in the story and kept asking me about homeless pets and animal shelters,  as we never really discussed the issue prior to reading this book.  The first family thinks he is too large,while the next family thinks he is too small, all while Runa patiently awaits to be loved by a family of her own. 

That is until a lady(Cherie) visits the animal orphanage on the last day and decides to adopt her.  She decides to name her Runa since she already says "Roo" as a greeting.  This wonderful story is actually a book that was written by Cherie herself!  Cherie adopted Runa is December of 1995, when Runa was only six month old and have lived together ever since.  She continues to write stories,  and has even started a fund for assisting rescue groups and individuals,  with pet health care costs in times of emergencies and pet care maintenace.  15 years later and both Cherie and Luna are living together and being spoiled by Cherie.

3 Bunny Books

What kind of pet did you have when you were a young child?  I can remember having Chickens,  Cats,  Turtles,  Fish,  Hamster's,  and probably some more that I cannot remember at the moment.  Just think if you grew up without ever owning a pet!  That is what happened to Patsy,  as she came from a hard working farm family,  but her family didn't have the time,  nor the money to afford a pet. That was until the she reached the age of 57,  and received a cute little bunny rabbit from her husband for Easter one year. 

Patsy M. My Hare Line - This book is the first published of the series.  The true story starts out by her husband surprising her with a rabbit they decide to name "Bunny Rabbit".  Later on in the story, Bunny Rabbit gains a couple more friends: Jack,  and Flopsey.  When I read the part about her husband finding what he at first thought was a rat I could so relate!  When I was a young girl my little sister and I owned two bunny rabbits,  and one day while checking their cage I noticed a rat,  which I later found out was a baby rabbit!   My children were amazed by the picture of the newborn rabbits,  they were balled and looked so much different than a grown bunny.   One day,  she comes home from work,  only to realize a dog had got into the bunny cages!  Unfortunately four of the little bunnies did not survive,  but fortunately six baby rabbits did survive.
2. My Hair Line Meets the Brown Rabbit - This is the second book of the series by Patsy M. Henry.  She dedicates this book in memory of Melissa Weaver Donley,  who passed away May 13, 2008 of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma.  This is a cute story about a wild rabbit who finds a new home in the front yard of a big house.  This book brings up topics perfect for children to discuss including the pros and cons that social and economic changes present.
3. My Hare Line and the Dead Pine Tree - This book is the third of the series by Patsy M. Henry.  This imaginative book is another great read in her line of delightful books.  My children enjoyed this book just as much as the other two books in the series,  but they especially enjoyed the Lullaby at the end of the story.

Jamie and The Haunted Light House

My children love books,   all types of books including "Jamie and Haunted Lighthouse."  This book is written by Betty Hodges,  a floral designer and a home health aid.  Betty writes stories that come from her heart.  Betty Hodges personally autographed and signed a book for my children.  Her paperback book includes 24 beautifully illustrated pages that are sure to intrigue your little ones.  I was very impressed with the appealing pictures inside each page of the book.

In this story,  Jamie recently moves into a lighthouse which she later thinks is haunted.  There is something very mysterious yet special about this book.  I read the book "Jamie and the Haunted Lighthouse" to my sons,  and they helped answer questions such as,  who is haunting the lighthouse?  And,  Why doesn't the light shine like it should?  Overall,  I thought it was a very cute book,  and my kids really enjoyed reading listening to me read it.  You can purchase this book for $8.99 on TatePublishing.com or on Amazon.com.

101 offline activities *Closed*

For most of us,  electronics run our lives,  from the moment we wake up,  to the moment we go to sleep.  Sometimes our children  rely too much on electronics,  for entertainment,  instead of being able to entertain themselves.  When I was  young we played with our dolls,  made forts,  climbed trees,  and thought up fun games to play,  but sadly today my children play video games,  listen to their MP3 Players and just don't do the activities that I use to when I was their age.  That is why I was looking forward to reviewing the book "101 Offline Activities You Can Do With Your Child." 

This book is by Steve and Ruth Bernnett,  the authors of the bestselling 365 TV-Free Activities You Can Do With Your Child.  As you flip through the pages you will find fun activities that will help you  interact with your children,  and provide hours of fun and enjoyment,  while using no electronics at all!  You can participate in the activities no matter where you are at including at home,  while waiting in line,  and in the car(depending upon the activity).   The Sign Jumbles and Log Those Plates are a  very fun game to play while riding in the car,  my children really had a blast playing them. 

"What Did You Say" is a really fun game that can be played with your entire family.  I am a stay at home mother ,   so each day while daddy is at work,  my kids and I have been choosing a new activity to play.  My seven year old had been practicing his math skills while playing the Macaroni math Activity.  I think their overall favorite activity is the Kitchen Bowling and Other Sports.   This book can be purchased online at  Amazon.com,  or at Barnes and Noble Booksellers.

I have a great idea for an activity to add to the book.  This activity requires nothing,  but a piece of paper,  a pen,  and your thinking cap!  You simply think of a theme,  such as "Baby",  or "Fruits and Vegetables".  After you come up with a theme you list each letter of the alphabet on each line.  Then you think of a word that starts with each letter that pertains to the alphabet. (for the example I only listed A-C,  but for the game you should list A-Z.
Example:
"FRUIT"-
APPLE
BANANA
CHERRY
The person to come up with the most words wins!  Please note that you should only list one word per letter.  This game is a lot of fun,  and can be played while on the road,  or in your house.  It also makes a great game for a Baby Shower,  or Birthday Party.

Super Blake Books *Closed*

My children love reading books,  but brushing their teeth?   Well,  not that much!  Super Blake and the Cavity Monster  is a wonderful book that helps promote the importance of brushing your teeth in a fun way that children can understand.  It really opens their imaginations,  and gets them thinking about brushing their teeth at least twice daily.  This book is written by Tracy Bickhaus and Illustrated by Korey Scott. 

Tracy Bickhaus is a mother of three and a wonderful freelance writer.  With allot of inspiration from her son  she created a series of books about a super hero that saves little one's from cavities, gingivitis, and plaque.   The talented illustrator of this book specializes in children's books,  educational material, and funny characters.  He perfectly catches the attention of children and adult readers.  His illustrations truly scream "fun"! 

My children are really fond of this magnificent book.   They even found similarities in the book that related to their own life.  My seven year old definitely related with the pancakes, and the name "Blake" made them think of a friend of our family.  The books illustrations are amazing!  As you flip through the pages you will find brightly colored images that  almost pop out at you.  Afterward,  I was surprised my two year old asked me to brush his teeth,  usually I have to tell him!

The book features four interesting characters: Super Blake,  Cavity Monster,  Ginger Vitis,  and Sir Plaque.  The illustrations are sure to catch both your eyes,  and your child's!  While on their site you will find some really cool printables such as Bookmarks,  Coloring Pages and Word Searches.   You can find Super Blake Books on Facebook and on Twitter.
